Approximately 80 members of the Central Bucks School District community joined together to participate in a seminar titled, “Supporting the Whole Child: Perspectives on Anxiety and Learning Differences,” on May 2 at Unami Middle School.
The workshop was presented by the Central Bucks Education Foundation and was facilitated by three psychologists: Dr. Megan Maynard, a CBSD nationally board certified school psychologist, as well as licensed psychologists Dr. Jason Tanenbaum and Dr. Lorna Jansen, both from The Center for Neuropsychology and Counseling in Chalfont.
Understanding and managing anxiety and learning differences in children are crucial factors in providing students with a path to academic success and emotional wellness. The presentation by the panel included valuable information on identifying learning challenges, providing support at school and at home, and determining courses of therapeutic action. Students presenting with ADHD, anxiety, autism, learning disabilities, and several other neurodivergent profiles were discussed in detail.
Through the sharing of information and responding to audience questions, educators and parents were able to explore strategies that promote inclusive learning, emotional regulation and academic success. Flexible teaching methods and individualized support were focused upon as key topics, as attendees were made aware of the rising impact of anxiety on students. Speakers addressed how academic pressure, social expectations and overstimulation can affect learners. Practical approaches were highlighted, such as trauma-informed practices, classroom accommodations and mindfulness techniques.
The repeating theme of the seminar was a message for collaborative communication between educators, families and mental health professionals. The goal of the event was to reinforce the importance of creating safe, supportive, and adaptable learning environments, where all children feel understood and empowered. Attendees left with actionable tools, reference materials, and a deeper awareness of how to reduce barriers to learning while prioritizing children’s well-being.
